Crossing Unmarked Snow (excerpt) - William Stafford

The things you do not have to say make you rich. Saying the things you do not have to say weakens your talk.  Hearing things you do not have to hear dulls your hearing, And things you know before you hear them - those are you, Those are why you are in the world.

How to Listen - James Crews

Listening is a form of worship, but you don't have to kneel on the floor with folded hands or mouth the perfect prayer. Just open the door of yourself to another, become the space they step through to show you who they are. This is holiness: two people seated together on the pew of a park bench, or the altar of a kitchen table. Even if no one says a word for a while, receive the silence until it's like a new language only the two of you can speak.

In the dark pre-dawn mornings, I listen to the trees. Sometimes I hear nothing. Sometimes words sail into my head, like the goldfinches landing on my birdfeeder. Today they told me: Ground! Ground deeply. You will know people who get ill. You may know some who will die. You could even be one of them. Your task today is to ground and be a solid presence on this patch of earth. Watch us and follow suit.
